“I am the expert”

Therapists (and other health professionals, like physicians) are often comfortable and confident in their role as expert.

Stigmatizing labels non-compliant

  • resistive
  • unwilling to change
  • unmotivated
  • poor insight
  • dysfunctional
  • oppositional
  • defiant

Describing someone as “schizophrenic” is no different from referring to another person as “cancerous”.

Effective strengths-based practice requires that we acknowledge that in the life of our clients we are not yet significant. However, we can use our guidance to locate and integrate those who are significant into the helping process.

A person is not their illness — a person is a person, with a physical or psychiatric problem.
