Fresh From the Garden: What I am reading, Part I

Fellow blogger John over at hilife2B inspired this post.  John has given readers a carnival like post that gives readers a summary of what has been his interesting reads in cyber space this week. My post series will instead focus on the texts I’m reading.

This is not to rub it in to students that I now, long graduated, have time to read again ~:-)  Simply to share some insights others have sourced to enhance your day and study focus (hopefully).

MOJO, December 2008~ Yes, a back issue, because someone was throwing it out and I value the writing skill and topics within, so moved the copy to my library shelf. Clever, witty, scathing and thought provoking commentaries of artists, bands and producers. Well worth a read (and a keep). Links to their website provide free tunes to tap away to. Did I mention that each issue comes with a CD! I now purchase a copy when I’m to reward myself for a goal achieved (with airfreight cost is around AU$18).

Toshihiko Izutsu’s Creation and the Timeless Order of Things: Essays in Islamic Mystical Philosophy. I was extremely fortunate to have this book put itself in my path during one of my op shop outings 7 years ago. Having first attempted a read whilst at uni it is delightful now to have further insight into the layers of meaning on my second read. It is fun to read over my penciled notations in the margins and what I have underlined in the past (yes, I write IN my books!) and to add to that understanding.

I am much more engaged with the text nowadays, perhaps because I have more time to read in the evenings, definitly because life experiences have allowed me to resonate more fully with Izutsu’s perspective. Deeply philosophical, I love it~ though I am biased, being a student of the unity of existence myself.

The Monthly, December 2007. Yes, another back issue saved from the bin. I am in awe at the writing prowess of the journalists, and appreciate their delving into sides of topics that I would not otherwise have access to via mainstream (Murdoch) media. This copy is also part of my library and some of the articles are my second reading~ their style is really that engaging.

What are you reading at the mo? Why?

I love seeing what others are filling their minds with … well, what words, that is. LOL It sounds like you’ve been keeping your brain busy.

I’m currently reading The Artist’s Way, my second time through the program … though I got sidetracked mid-stream, I’ve picked it up again. It might get set aside during NaNoWriMo, depending on how much time I have to read while doing so much writing.

hmmm~ sounds interesting~ I will keep an eye out for the book. My book reading (the philosophy one) is paced at one page a night~ tis deeeeep.

me loves words too~ though it’s the not getting attached to them that is the challenge.
