Tell Stories~ It’s Good For You

Today’s post is from John who hosts Hilife2b from Chicago. John shares his story of being a college student who blogs. You can see for yourself the benefits of reflective writing in terms of positive outlook, communication of understandings, and a willingness to share…

I’m not going to try and compare my college life to yours – obviously, everyone’s life isn’t the same. But throughout these 7 months (and counting), life in college as a college blogger has been both an inspiration and a challenge.

I’ve met so many people on this journey and have interacted with a number of successful bloggers. Lifestyle designers, personal development coaches, backpackers, gurus, self-proclaimed experts – you name it, I’ve met them.

With all of these contacts, you’d think that I would have trouble managing the blog and schoolwork. Well, actually… you’d be right. It’s a tough job being a blogger, especially when you’re not exactly being paid for what you’re doing.

That’s right, I said it folks. Nadda. Zero. Zip. Zilch. I don’t make a penny from my blog.

If I don’t make anything from the blog, you may ask, then why am I still doing it? Can’t I just get a job like normal people? There are already people on campus earning much more than you’ve made during your entire time blogging (which is, of course, nothing).

But that’s just it, right? I’m not doing it for the money.

Here are the main reasons I’m a college blogger:

I like helping others

Now what I write about mainly deals with personal development, self help, and motivation. I feel this at least gives some help to those who need it.

When people get excited by my writing, it makes me feel good. Just knowing that people are getting helped by what I do is all that matters to me right now. Sure, I could be partying every night, but this just feels so much better and so much more productive.

I want a passive income

Ha ha, I know I said I’m not doing this for the money, but down the line, money is going to become a necessity if I’m going to keep the blog active. So, how am I going to make money from my blog?

To be honest, I really don’t plan to.

The blog is a place for my community to share their thoughts on my posts or just to talk in general. I’ll offer products in the future from time to time, but for the most part, it’s a purely social medium.

The income aspect comes in when talking about profit-making branches of the blog (such as online businesses). Without this blog, I honestly wouldn’t have known that you can make a passive income online.

I desire a life a college degree alone can’t give me

Of course, college work comes first, but at times, it’s nice to know that you have such a large network of friends who you can bounce ideas off of. I admit, when the blog was starting up, I was devouring material on how to blog, how to get more subscribers, and how to write well.

When I first started the blog, you could say I was a bit greedy. Money was on my mind when it launched, and because of that, my writing was distorted.

I had no passion, no zeal, no anything. I was just money hungry.

I soon realized, three months after the launch, that I had to write about what I felt passionate about (which was self help and motivation). So I started righting about that. Then… I took off.

Writing post after post isn’t a hassle. It’s something a really love doing. A college degree can never give me the satisfaction that helping others can. It might be an important tool down the line, but for now, I’m just blogging away.

I inspire by blogging. And you?

It’ll be awhile before I graduate from college. But until then, expect me to keep writing (and maybe making some video as well) to inspire others. It’ll continue to be a challenge, but as long as I love what I’m doing, there’ll be no stopping me.

What about you? Even though you’re in school, what are you doing now to help people?
