‘The Day After’: Exam prep need not be a time of darkeness and despair
Exam prep can be a time of high stress for students. As an online tutor I find that many students follow a similar thinking pattern as I did when getting ready for exams. That is~ focusing on how much I had to do, rather than doing one thing at a time.
Michael, today’s Guest Blogger from over at lifebeginzatpoetry shares with us how to not be distracted by anxiety and self-doubt. There is Light ~ one has only to Follow…
‘The day after’
The greatest wish
For they who are by some dread tormented
Is to see the day after
Therein lies their safety
The day after is one they construct
After the image of their desire
To see the day after
Is to prepare for the day after
For by itself will it not appear
But to they who summon him
Will he their wishes fulfill
They who prepare for the day after
Should set themselves apart
They must cease all liaisons with fear
And abandon all communings with worry
They should exorcise anxiety
And separate far from doubt
The day after cometh
To they who invoke him proper
These are they who invest in confidence
Their tools of trade sharp at the ready
To carve a path to the day after
The day after cometh to the wise person
Who understands his way
The wise man knoweth sure
That the way of the day after
Is by diligence attained
The wise man will enter into their closet
Shut out the world without
And in the closet build
The skeleton of the day after
Now they who are by waves buffeted
And who dread the approach of some omen
Will do well to remember this
No stone can prevent your joy
If you invest in diligence
And embark upon with sure confidence
The path to the day after
Above all stands this truth
They who prepare for the day after
They who dream the vision of that they seek
Who start immediate to study to be quiet
And wallow not in dejection nor self-pity
Will sure as the sun rises to his law
See the day after certain
Commentary: exam preps are notorious for the anxiety, worry, fear and tension they generate.
The title ‘the day after’ refers to the ‘time’ following any event, major or minor, which causes considerable anxiety. The anxiety causing event could be an examination, marriage, an important interview, a court date, etc. It could be any thing that makes one worry or sweat.
‘The day after’ is not an actual day per se. It is ‘the time beginning immediately after the anxiety-causing event ends’. It is therefore a period of time and not a specific day.
The wonderful thing about ‘the day after’ is this; it is entirely in the control of the one faced by worry. And this is why! You can mentally craft ‘the day after’ any way you want, with particular emphasis on a pleasant outcome. Is that not simply wonderful?
The concept of ‘the day after’ is simple: everyone has thought of or imagined what they would like to do after some upcoming event which causes undue stress or anxiety. Some imagine themselves going out for a celebratory drink or dinner. Others imagine themselves going on a trip or vacation, and some imagine themselves splurging on some gadget or item.
The key is this; first and foremost if you are worried about something, imagine yourself having successfully completed that which you worry about.
Secondly and importantly, ‘the day after’ will not come without effort! There is no wishful thinking involved. The key is to imagine yourself having completed the desired objective successfully following a well-constructed plan, then following the plan so imagined!
And actual example might take this form:
See yourself relaxing and or celebrating after completing a challenging event such as an examination.
Then prepare or study for the exam.
Finally experience in reality that which you prepared for.
Remember that you have to execute the steps you visualized yourself going through. Visualize ‘the day after’ in your Mind’s eye whilst preparing for it day by day, hour by hour and minute by minute with hard work.
Make no mistake ‘the day after’ is brought on by hard work!
After you do the things listed above, you can be certain that ‘the day after’ will materialize and that it will be one of joy and success!
