It’s A Big Deal to Not Drink

Watching some of Big Brother last night (i’m able to chat with my boy about social interactions :-)
I was surprised at the ongoing teetotaler label for Rebecca. Surprised because in Australia we have a commercial that points out that it is not a big deal not to have drink, or to stop drinking when one has had enough. Near the end of the ad the whole globe is sending up a shout…”[Enter your name]” is not drinking !!!”

Nice to see Channel 10 does not believe in making a big deal out of Rebecca’s choice. Very proactive and responsible of them.

I chose not to drink from the ages of 15 - 23 (indulged occasionally as a 13-14 year old). I still went out to clubs (i looked older than i was) and parties - but no alcohol. My, did people make a fuss. My choice even seemed to annoy some people, I was labeled a bore, straight, and square. Whatever. It was one of my first experiences that made me realise how irrational people’s perceptions of others can be. BTW, Australian culture is known for its drinking, we joke about making it an Olympic sport.

I thought it was great that Rebecca’s choice not to drink was shared with Australia. I am just disappointed that that choice has to be heralded so often like it is a big deal.

It is worrying that not drinking is still seen as a big deal from the perspective of it being unusual or strange. It should certainly be shown as a big deal in the sense that it is the safest way to avoid drinking problems that regularly start with young drinking - a ripe breeding ground for alcoholism.

i agree~ it’s the 21st century and western nations rave about “individuality” yet point the finger at those who make choices on their own terms.
Youth and alcohol nowadays is very much a concern~more access, more opportunities for predators to gain trust of youngn’s by purchasing them alcohol, and more access to other drugs to consume with alcohol-whether by choice or “spiking”.
