Why Do I Need to Appreciate the Role of Research in Psychology?
I remember as an undergrad that many of us were unprepared for the stats components. Somehow we had missed reading about this subject when we signed up; perhaps it was a defense mechanism ~:-) Anyways, next thing you know we are in a class and all these formulas and new language are being delivered by a lecturer or tutor. And we are expected to read journal articles that are focused on research and design to find answers to questions in psychology.
The link between studying psychology theories, my goal to use psychology to help myself and others, and the use of research and statistics, was not clear to me. Nor to many others.
Why do we students of psychology need to learn about and appreciate the role of research design and statistics? Well, if you are only learning about psychology because it is a part of your degree requirement or you have your butt on a lecture seat to get a job where you are paid well~ the reasoning behind learning the role of research in psychology is unlikely to interest you.
Firstly, by recording and analysing our observations we can identify patterns that can help ourselves/others make significant changes to our lives.
Secondly, research is a way to get a much better idea of what could really be going on.
Thirdly, the scientific method is a great way to be as accurate as possible in recording, analysing and drawing conclusions about our observations.
As you can see, students of psychology have access to a phenomenal skill~ being able to design, analyse and share research that has real impacts on real people. You are not just jumping through hoops. You are discovering ways in which you can fulfill your career and personal goals, whilst helping the wider community and making a real difference in the world.
Well done ~:-)
