Tutoring for Success!
In a traditional classroom, one lecturer/TA is expected to teach up to thirty students. As much as the lecturer/TA might try to spend time with each individual student, it often simply isn’t practical to do so on a daily basis. Even if a lecturer/TA offers to help students and answer questions after class, some students can feel intimidated by the prospect of asking for special assistance.
Numbers Don’t Lie
Students with consistent tutoring and or mentoring have been found to score higher on standardized tests than do students who rely on school support alone (Tutoring program boosts test scores; California: Salida Union School District, 2006). This in and of itself is a great reason to employ the services of a Tutor:Mentor. Even admission to state universities has become more competitive in recent years. A Tutor:Mentor can provide a much-needed edge for an average student who wants to be assured of college acceptance and to maintain a high standard of academic engagement when during their college years.
Tailored Tutor:Mentoring
Several, distinct learning styles have been identified: auditory, tactile/kinesthetic, and visual. Of these three, only the auditory and visual learners are targeted in a traditional classroom environment. By addressing their specific learning requirements, a Tutor:Mentor can potentially help tactile/kinesthetic learners grasp concepts that are presented in class according to only one learning style.
Time Maximization
A skilled Tutor:Mentor can help a student maximize the time they spend studying. With college activities demanding more and more of time after class, shaving a few hours off of a student’s study time can make a huge difference in their overall academic and extracurricular performance.
Mentorship
Importantly, a Tutor:Mentor can act in the role of mentor to a student struggling with social issues or academic concerns. This is especially important when the student in question is juggling work, studies and is often a parent.
Time Management
Many high-achieving students find that stress and test anxiety are major obstacles to achieving success. A Tutor:Mentor is in a unique position to instruct them on study techniques and time management habits. If students learn time management strategies early in their academic careers, they are more likely to succeed in the more competitive college environment.
