De Bono Code: Communication strategies
Edward De Bono’s Approach to Navigating Communication
Edward De Bono presents an expansion of lateral thinking to be inclusive of a “possibility system” that places value on creativity; allows for fully justified ventures which do not shine as expected; and emphasises the potential for change of patterning systems.
De Bono points out how this approach to life skills (problem solving, negotiating, conflict resolution, creativity etc) is the opposite of logical thought, which tends to be emphasised in Western culture, creating boxes and limitations that are not as useful, productive or strong as they first may appear to be.
The above vid is a great introduction to the De Bono Code (trust me~ much more adventurous than the Davinci version). De Bono draws on his vast experience and considerations of thought and language to share a style of communication that may be of interest to students, parents and organisations.
De Bono Code Applications
For students, parents and organisations, use of the De Bono Code can replace outdated authoritarian black&white concepts; e.g., it’s this way because I say it is.
Each of the groups mentioned are learning new concepts~ students adapting to new ways of thinking (e.g., multiple theories and models to explain the same phenomenon); parents learning how to communicate with their kids; and organisations cultivating inclusive cultures and inter-organisational collaborations.
Codes~ specific to the group can streamline conversation, lessen misinterpretations and remove the limitations of current accepted “turns of phrases”.
