Reviving My Student Newsletter: Sight Reshuffled
I thought that I would dip deep into already published material of mine to answer some student queries. A popular topic for the past few months has been “ways to research using Google”.
Sight 1(1)
Be here now…
“There may be a long list of things to do,
but really there is just one thing on the list
at any time. If you think of it like that, the whole
world looks different, and you can stay quite calm”
- Zoketsu Norman Fischer(2006, p. 1)
… Finding the Articles
- Start with the most up-to-date journal sources on your topic. Search from their Reference List.
- Collect articles that SUPPORT your choice of participants/materials, procedure/analysis or design. This will identify gaps and it will help you with what to write where – no need to re-invent the wheel. You will also get exposed to OPPOSING arguments, which will improve your argument (when you counter them).
- Use Boolean Logic for surfing:
George Boolean developed Boolean logic which most search engines use when they are sourcing your keywords.
Here’s a brief guide to effective surfing by Cohen(2001) http://library.albany.edu/internet/boolean.html
Below are “filters” to type into your Google Search:
OR e.g., journal OR diary
synonyms expands the search
AND e.g., reflective AND journal
narrows the search
+ shorthand AND
NOT e.g., journal NOT article
excludes terms from the search
- shorthand NOT
( ) e.g., (reflective journal) this particular phrase; search first
” ” e.g., “cognitive behavioural therapy”
prevents spaces defaulting to AND or NOT
- Make use of the Student Psychology Forum http://www.psitutor.org/Forum.html and the Thesis Reading Group http:thesisreadinggroup.wetpint.com
- Email the original researcher/s directly if you can’t find/access the full text, or have questions about the study. Their credentials (e.g. University and Department) or addys are normally on the first page of a journal article (which are there for a reason
.
Let me know if this is useful, in what ways and if not why not…
